Timeless cable sweater patterns
One of the most popular and timeless types of sweater patterns is the cable design. Cable knitting is done by rearranging the order of stitches to create a serpentine pattern. The number of serpentine cables accounts for the different possible designs. One cable will create a simple pattern. When a second is added, the cables can intertwine and look similar to a rope or look like two serpentines, one on top of the other. Three cables can be arranged as a simple braid or can be placed in such a way that they will appear to form a chain. Several different designs can be achieved with four cables. Five cables form what is commonly referred to as a Celtic princess braid, and six cables form a very square-looking Saxon braid. Designs using more than six cables are very rare. The Aran pattern, otherwise known as the fisherman's sweater, is perhaps the most widely recognized of all cable sweater patterns.
